The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF) commemorates its 30th anniversary this year!

This “Creative Café” is a part of the official program of the YIDFF 2019 “Yamagata and Film”, and we will screen the short documentary “Yamagata Maiko”, produced by Yamagata City and Yamagata Creative City Promotion Council, the core body of the Yamagata City of Film.

Did you know that you can meet a maiko, an apprentice geisha, in Yamagata City?

Yamagata Maiko is an icon of traditional performing arts and Japanese restaurant culture, so-called ryo-tei, of Yamagata City. The film “Yamagata Maiko” (2019 / 26 min) carries passions and charms of people in Yamagata to hand the traditions down for future generations.

The film was directed by Mr. SATO Koichi, the director of the documentary film “The World’s Top Theater”, which was screened in the 2017 edition of the festival. We will invite him and Yamagata Maikos to talk and perform for this special occasion.
